Today’s Spotlight On… is with Kath Wilson, our Deputy Hospitality Manager!
What does your role at the Wyvern Theatre entail?
As Deputy Hospitality Manager, I assist the General Manager in running our food and drink operation across both the Wyvern Theatre and Arts Centre. This includes managing our cafes, bars and event spaces. Most recently, I have overseen the launch of our brand new restaurant – now open for pre-show dining. I support the management of our large team of brilliant hospitality staff, making sure we are delivering consistently outstanding service to our customers.
You also organise and manage hospitality events. Which of our events is your favourite to work on?
I love this part of my job- from researching and booking new events to helping create in-house events. They are all so different; comedy dinner shows and tribute nights, corporate meetings and private functions. But organising a wedding reception; ensuring that the day runs smoothly, as well as acting as a calming influence is my favourite event to work on. There is something really rewarding about being part of a couples special day!
What attracted you to working at the Wyvern Theatre and especially in hospitality?
I studied Drama and Creative Writing at University, so I have always been passionate about the Arts. I love theatre and knew a job here would be diverse, collaborative and creative – I was not wrong! We’re creating a product – be that food, drink, or an experience – and there’s always scope to dream up new ways of making it more enjoyable for customers. Working in hospitality attracted me because it is a people-orientated industry. Being able to influence and play a part in the customer experience is so rewarding. People always need food, drink and great entertainment, don’t they?
Have there been any shows performed at the Wyvern Theatre or Arts Centre that you would secretly like to have been in yourself ?
Oh, absolutely! It has been some years since I last ‘tread the boards’ and the thought of swapping my front of house duties to performing makes me nervous! But I would secretly LOVE to be in a SALOS show. I’ve seen many and enjoyed them all, especially ‘Sweeney Todd’. I’m jealous of those in this year’s production of The Sound of Music. There, not so secret now!
What is your favourite item from our new menu?
Just one item? Impossible. As no meal is complete without 3 courses, my favourite starter is Soup of the Day (always homemade and always delicious). My favourite main is Hoisin Duck Steamed Buns (the smell alone is SO good). And my favourite dessert is our Marshfield Farm Chocolate Fudge Brownie Chocolate Ice-Cream (3 scoops, no less of course).
